The Format of the SAQs

The SAQ section of the Final FRCA consists of 50 questions. Each question has a single correct answer. The questions are divided into 10 sections, each of which covers a different area of anaesthesia. The sections are as follows:

  • Basic sciences
  • Pharmacology
  • Equipment
  • Monitoring
  • Techniques
  • Difficult airway management
  • Paediatric anaesthesia
  • Obstetric anaesthesia
  • Critical care
  • Pain management

Each question is worth 2 marks. The total score for the SAQ section is 100 marks.

The Types of SAQs

There are two main types of SAQs:

  • Knowledge-based questions test your knowledge of the basic sciences, pharmacology, equipment, and other aspects of anaesthesia.
  • Clinical-based questions test your ability to apply your knowledge to clinical scenarios.

Knowledge-based questions are usually straightforward and can be answered by recalling information from your studies. Clinical-based questions are more challenging and require you to think critically about the situation and apply your knowledge to come up with the best answer.

How to Prepare for the SAQs

The best way to prepare for the SAQs is to start by familiarising yourself with the format and the types of questions you can expect. You can do this by reading the official FRCA syllabus and by looking at past papers.

Once you have a good understanding of the SAQs, you can start to practice answering questions. There are a number of resources available to help you with this, including:

  • Past papers
  • Question banks
  • Online courses
  • Group study sessions

It is important to practice answering questions under timed conditions. This will help you to get used to the pressure of the exam and to develop a strategy for answering questions quickly and efficiently.

Tips for Answering SAQs

Here are a few tips for answering SAQs:

  • Read the question carefully. Make sure you understand what the question is asking before you start to answer it.
  • Use the keywords in the question to guide your answer.
  • Be concise and to the point. You only need to write enough to answer the question.
  • Use technical terms correctly.
  • Proofread your answer before you submit it.

The SAQ section of the Final FRCA is a challenging but important part of the exam. By following the advice in this guide, you can increase your chances of success.
