Ada Mackenzie was born in St Andrews, Scotland, on October 3, 1873. She began playing golf at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. In 1893, she won the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship for the first time. She would go on to win the championship two more times, in 1897 and 1901.
