Early Life and Career

Ada Mackenzie was born in St Andrews, Scotland, on October 3, 1873. She began playing golf at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. In 1893, she won the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship for the first time. She would go on to win the championship two more times, in 1897 and 1901.

In 1902, the Women's British Open was founded. Mackenzie was one of the favorites to win the tournament, and she did not disappoint. She shot a 36-hole total of 172 to win by three strokes. Mackenzie's victory was a landmark moment for women's golf. It was the first time that a woman had won a major golf tournament.

Later Career and Legacy

After her victory in the Women's British Open, Mackenzie continued to play competitive golf for several more years. She won the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship again in 1904 and finished in the top 10 in the Women's British Open several times.

Mackenzie retired from competitive golf in 1910. She continued to be involved in the sport, however, as a teacher and administrator. She served as the president of the Ladies' Golf Union from 1920 to 1922.

Ada Mackenzie died in St Andrews, Scotland, on April 10, 1949. She is remembered as one of the greatest women golfers of all time. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975.
